We are so excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with Rotary Clubs from District 6910, 7020 and community partners in the Bahamas to support the Rotary International effort to Create Hope in the World.
Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia is partnering with Rotary to lead a Girl Empowerment Project focused on period poverty. Period poverty is defined as inadequate access to menstrual hygiene tools and education, including but not limited to sanitary products, washing facilities and waste management. Did you know 1 out of every 10 menstruating youth misses school during their menstrual cycle due to lack of access to menstrual products and resources? Girl Scouts can help!
A team of our girls is leading the effort to collect materials and sew reusable sanitary napkins for girls who have limited access to resources. The goal is to secure the supplies to make at least 500 kits. Our Girl Scouts will then journey with Rotary to Nassau and work side-by-side with fellow Girl Guides in Nassau and Rotarians to assemble period hygiene kits, write notes of affirmation, and teach local girls how to sew the reusable pads to sustain this effort on the island moving forward. The Girl Guides from Nassau and District 7020 Rotarians will collaborate to distribute to girls in need in the Nassau community and put the systems and partners in place to ensure this project’s long-term sustainability. What a wonderful way for Girl Scouts to support Rotary International’s Girl Empowerment initiative and directly assist with the child and maternal health priority!
If you or your troop or community group would like to donate supplies to help with this effort or sponsor a Girl Scout's trip expenses, please contact Cheryl Legette. Items needed for the hygiene kits include bars of soap, wash cloths, deodorant, fabric, and thread. If you would like to sew some pads for the girls to take, you can click here for the pattern and instructions.
While in Nassau, girls will also help with clean up and repair work at the Girl Guides camp. The Bahamas Girl Guide Camp sustained significant damage during recent hurricanes and District 7020 Rotarians have a running list of repairs they are working to address. They’ve asked our help to tackle these projects:
Painting of the Brownie Hut
Painting the kitchen
Patching and painting cracks in concrete walls and patios
Hanging three internal doors
Installing metal lock guards
Replacing external light fixtures
Socket repairs
Wooden boxing repairs
With many hands we can make this light work and really leave the Bahamas Girl Guide Camp much better than we found it. Girl Scouts and Rotary - we make a great team!
