History

The Girl Scout First Headquarters building, formerly the carriage house for Juliette Gordon Low’s adult home, known as the Andrew Low House, was willed to the Girl Scouts of Savannah, GA, Inc. upon her death in 1927. The building has served Girl Scouts longer than any other building in the nation and is the only building left by Juliette to Girl Scouts. Jointly, with the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, Girl Scout First Headquarters was declared Savannah’s first National Historic Landmark (as the “Juliette Low Historic District”) in 1965; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. During times of need and transition, space within the building has also been shared with other organizations benefiting the community (Community Chest/United Way and the Junior League of Savannah) and the world (The British War Relief Association during World War II).

On January 15, 1996, the First Headquarters building reopened to the public in its current incarnation as a museum, program center, and shop. Today, it offers exciting interactive educational experiences for Girl Scouts and the community and, on weekends and school breaks, is usually staffed by local Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors. It also houses the council’s archives, available by appointment for research purposes. Groups from Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia may make an appointment to conduct a special ceremony in the museum or the courtyard. Volunteer opportunities for adults include shop support, museum interpretation, program delivery, and archival support.

To book a guided experience at Girl Scout First Headquarters, please click on a time slot in the calendar below.

  • Due to the small size of the building and high guest turnover, for the safety of all guests & staff, First Headquarters will limit group size to 35 people. If public health concerns require, tour capacities may be lowered and masking may be required.
  • At this time, we are only accepting reservations for guided tours for parties with a minimum of 10 people.  If you have a smaller party (i.e. your party does not have the required minimum of 10 people), we respectfully request that you please schedule your reservation so that you will be joining a larger party. If you have a smaller party, please see notes below.
  • Also for parties of 9 or fewer, FHQ will be posting each Sunday night or Monday morning on our social media the best times smaller parties may visit in the coming week. Please keep in mind that these windows of opportunity are based on availability and a short waiting time may be necessary. We will work with your party (and others) to safely accomodate as many guests as possible for self-guided tours, capacity allowing. You are also able to add your smaller party to a larger/already booked reservation.
  • Please note: There will be a slight increase in tour prices in 2026.

By being "considerate and caring" and by "respecting myself and others," together we can wisely use the wonderful resources that are Girl Scout First Headquarters, our staff, and volunteers to create a fun, engaging, and memorable experience for all who want to visit.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation!

The cost for a self-guided tour is $4 per person.

At this time, we require a minimum of 10 people for a guided experience. Please follow Safety Activity Checkpoints guidelines regarding girl/adult ratios.

How can I donate items to FHQ? toggle arrow

If you are interested in donating historical Girl Scout items to First Headquarters, please fill out this form. Due to the large volume of emails and messages we receive, this is the most effective way to submit your items for consideration.

Is this the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace? toggle arrow

No. The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace is a house museum and national Girl Scout program center owned and operated by the national organization, Girl Scouts of the USA. This facility, dedicated to interpreting the life and times of Juliette Gordon Low and her family, is located on Oglethorpe Avenue. They may be contacted at (912)-233-4501 or by visiting their website.

Girl Scout First Headquarters is a Girl Scout museum owned and operated by the local Girl Scout Council; the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, Inc. We are located at 330 Drayton St. in Savannah.

What is the weather like in Savannah? toggle arrow

Savannah is beautiful... but humid, and often very, VERY hot AND temperamental. “Scoff,” you say. “I’m from _____ (fill in the blank with another rather warm and/or humid locale), we can handle this!”

However, because of Savannah’s unique location and our miles and miles of salt marshes, the humidity levels and pop-up storms almost have to be experienced to be believed. Savannah’s weather is like its charm; very slow and low-key, so that you don’t even realize what’s happening until it’s almost too late. Because of this, FHQ or GSHG reserves the right to alter any reservations due to inclement weather including, but not limited to: heat index, rain/storms, and other weather watches or warnings. In general, we encourage you to select indoor or water-based activities (near shelter) during the summer afternoons. Also, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! “But I just had a bottle of water!” Good! Have another! Trust us!

Payments and Refund Information toggle arrow

A full refund (minus system processing fees) will be issued if the refund is requested at least 60 days prior to the reserved date. A 50% refund will be issued for cancellations requested 30 to 60 days prior to the reserved date. No refunds will be issued for cancellations less than 30 days ahead of the reserved date. A full refund (minus system processing fees) will be issued if your reservation is cancelled by GSHG for any reason.
