Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia is pleased to offer the following program opportunities for Girl Scout Seniors ( girls in 9th and 10th grades ) and Girl Scout Ambassadors (girls in 11 th and 12 th grades) for Fall 2013. Events are listed in chronological order.

  • S'mores Weekend Core Camp

    ​Under the Big Top!  Girl Scouts of all ages will experience all camping has to offer with this circus theme!  From canoeing to swimming and archery, we’ll do it all under the big top.  You’ll be able to choose between some circus skills (depending on the girls' age) like juggling, acro dancing, hooping, stage combat, flag spinning, a few magic tricks, knife throwing, hand balancing, clowning and making balloon animals.  And then, we’ll cap off the weekend by having our very own carnival on Saturday night.

  • Outdoor Skills Series: Session 4 – Canoeing

    ​In the last session of the Outdoor Skill Series girls will learn the basic strokes of paddling, and safety on the water, in addition to the knowledge they will gain about how the tides affect your trip and ideal paddling conditions.  Patch Included.

  • Counselor in Training (CIT) Internship - Session 1 - Camp Martha Johnston

    ​Have you already taken the CIT class? Do you want to come back to camp to further your skills?  Come to the CIT internship class where you will work one on one with a staff member to plan and execute activities for your assigned group for the week.  You’ll spend your days not only leading songs and games, but getting to know the girls in your unit by cheering them on during an accomplishment or helping them get through a bought of homesickness.  You’ll truly understand what it means to be a camp counselor by the time the week is over.

  • Counselor in Training (C.I.T.) - Sessions 2 & 3 - Camp Martha Johnston
    Grades 9-10Grades 11-12

    ​(Seniors and Ambassadors exiting 9th – 11th grades)
    Do you love camp but want more responsibility?  Do you like teaching younger girls?  Then the new C-I-T program is for you!  Have fun learning leadership skills and teamwork during this 2-week program. During the first week, we’ll learn how to write lesson plans and risk management programs for activities. C-I-Ts will study age group characteristics and how they apply to age appropriate planning.  Of course it’s not all seriousness, all the time. There will be plenty of breaks, during which you’ll will enjoy traditional camp activities such as swimming, camp fires and archery.  The second week of the C-I-T program, you will be applying what you’ve learned by working alongside a staff member to mentor and teach a group of younger girls.

  • Discover SCUBA - Session 2 - Camp Tanglewood
    Grades 4-5Grades 6-8Grades 9-10Grades 11-12

    ​*Campers must be able to swim and pass the deep water Girl Scout swim test.

    Camp staffers will partner with a local dive shop to introduce girls to scuba diving.  Each camper will have a day in the pool with a snorkeling instructor. The next day, the group will travel off camp to an open water area for a true open water snorkeling experience. Then it’s back at camp for one more day in the pool as you learn the basics of Scuba.  When not in the pool our campers will enjoy cooking, arts and crafts, games, and songs. (This is not a certification program but a sampler experience.) High adventure instruction is provided by certified professionals at an introductory level which allows for “no one left behind” progression as a group. Juniors will receive a mortified Scuba instructor experience to meet Girl Scouts Safety Check-Points.

  • STEM Camp 2014 at Columbus State University
    Grades 9-10Grades 11-12

    Hands on fun with engineers!  Learn how engineers will be designing the future – and be a part of it.  Build and test rocket engines, understand the connection of astronomy and robotics, rebuild a computer and learn how to design computer games.  Make a sculpture from recycled materials and present it to the Columbus Art Society. We’ll also venture out for even more challenges;  we’ll kayak down the Chattahoochee River, participate in an environmental project at Oxbow Meadows Environmental Center, and check out some STEM careers at the KIA Motors, Columbus Recycling Plants, and the WRBL Meteorology Center.​

  • Counselor in Training II (CIT II) - Sessions 4 & 5 - Camp Martha Johnston

    ​Requirements:  You have had the first part of CIT Training, and now it is time to apply those leadership skills with the campers. You’ll spend part of your week working with camp counselors running program for younger campers while enjoying some camp time of your own.  There will also be time to check out the specialty positions of camp like cook, arts and crafts, lifeguarding, directing all camp program and healthcare supervision.  The end the week will be your turn to direct an all camp event/activity working directly with the camp staff.  Our certified seasonal camp staff will have your back and be ready to welcome you into a new phase of the counselor world.

  • SCUBA Diving Certification - Session 4C - Camp Okitayakani
    Grades 6-8Grades 9-10Grades 11-12

    Scuba Diving is an opportunity to experience the underwater world. GSHG is partnering with the Albany “Dive Shop” to offer this NAUI certification class for Cadettes through Ambassadors.  Our instructor will be working with the girls in the classroom and in the pool at camp for the first few days; then the girls will travel to Panama City and spend 2 nights at a local camp ground to do 4 open water dives. Girls who complete this course will be certified to rent and participate on scuba trips offered by Girl Scouts and dive trips all over the world. When girls are not in the pool or class they will have all of camp to explore, as well as participate in activities such as art, archery, outdoor cooking, and canoeing. Instruction is provided by certified professionals at an introductory level which allows for “no one left behind” progression as a group.

    *Campers must be able to swim and pass the deep water Girl Scout swim test.

    A special open house will be offered for parents and girls to meet our instructor and to take the swim test. This meeting is not required to participate in this certification; however the swim test is required.

  • Duct Tape Engineering - Session 5 - Camp Martha Johnston

    Have you ever seen all those rows of duct tape in the store and wondered what you could do with it all?  Or are you already an expert in duct tape masterpieces? Come to CMJ where we will explore all the possibilities of duct tape from its original purpose in World War II to the present day of making flowers and purses.  After learning some basic engineering principles and techniques we’ll put it to use to craft our very own designs. You could design a brand new invention or repurpose an existing one.  The possibilities are endless!​

  • Imagine Your STEM Future - Session 6 - Camp Martha Johnston
    Grades 6-8Grades 9-10Grades 11-12

    ​Have you imagined yourself as a scientist… an engineer or a mathematician?  Or are you afraid of science?  Learn from Pink STEM mentors all about science and math with your new friends.  We’ll extract DNA from a banana and learn about food science by making our own vinaigrette.  We’ll use games to learn about engineering careers.  We’ll tackle how oil spills affect the environment and how we can clean them up.  Of course we will also enjoy traditional camp activities like swimming and canoeing and we’ll put a new science twist while improving our archery skills.  You may have thought science was hard, but by the end of this week you’ll see how fun it can be.

  • Travel Camp 2014
    Grades 9-10Grades 11-12

    This Girl Scout road trip will be filled with adventure as we participate in Survival Skill Classes, hike portions of the Appalachian Trail, fly through the mountains on Zip Lines, and go rafting at Nantahala Falls.   We’ll hub at Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) just outside of Bryson City, NC and take advantage of our surroundings; learning about the local legends and lore of the Cherokee people, hike the trails and visit the waterfalls found in Cherokee.  We’ll top off our trip with a spectacular view from the top of the Smokey Mountains.  Hop in, we’re headed for adventure and a great time on the road.​  For girls entering grads 9-12.
